What You’ll Find at the Ponce De Leon Inlet Lighthouse
Inside the white picket fence that surrounds the Ponce De Leon Inlet Lighthouse in New Smyrna Beach, you’ll discover a beautiful display of Florida and lighthouse history. Operated by the Ponce De Leon Inlet Lighthouse Preservation Association, the museum you’ll find there will entreat you with the sights and sounds of the lighthouse. You’ll also enjoy experiences tailored to both the younger and older demographics.
As Florida’s tallest lighthouse, the Ponce De Leon Inlet Lighthouse sees close to 170,000 visitors annually. And, for good reason! In 1998, the lighthouse was designated as a National Historic Landmark. Not only is it the tallest lighthouse in Florida, but it’s the second tallest masonry lighthouse in the country. You’ll have the chance to climb the 203 steps to the top of the lighthouse which is approximately 175-feet tall.
Check Out the Lighthouse Museum
What was once the dwelling place of the keeper of the lighthouse is now the Ponce De Leon Inlet Lighthouse Museum. There, you’ll find exhibits featuring the United States Lighthouse Service, local area history, the stories of the keepers and families, and of the United States Life-Saving Service. One of the most notable exhibits there is the Ayers Davies Lens Exhibit Building. It houses one of the best restored Fresnel lens collections in the world. Within the collection are the Cape Canaveral and original Ponce De Leon Inlet Lighthouse lenses.
