1. Drive on the Sand
A unique part about visiting New Smyrna Beach beaches is that you can drive on them! In New Smyrna, you can load up the car with your beach day essentials and hit the sand with ease. Gone are the complications that come with lugging heavy coolers, huge surfboards, or beach toys and games across the dunes. Driving is permitted on New Smyrna Beach beaches from 8 a.m to 7 p.m. from May 1 to October 31. From November 1 to April 30, you can drive on the beach from sunrise to sunset.
However, if you’d rather not navigate the sand, or you’re traveling with children, there are traffic-free zones on the beach, too. You can find these zones, plus off-beach parking areas, at Smyrna Dunes Park, 27th Avenue Park, Matthews Boulevard, Hiles Boulevard, and Mary McLeod Bethune Park.
2. Surf the Waves
One of the biggest attractions at New Smyrna Beach beaches is surfing. In fact, Surfer Magazine lists New Smyrna as one of the best surf towns in Florida. Whether you’ve never been on a surfboard or you’re an old pro, you’ll love this popular beach activity. If you’re a beginner, there are plenty of New Smyrna Beach surf instructors ready and eager to show you the ropes. Surfin’ NSB is one of our favorite places to recommend. They offer individual and group lessons for surfers of all experience levels. And, if you’re an experienced surfer, be sure to check out Nichols Surf Shop before you hit the waves. Nichols is the oldest locally-owned surf shop in New Smyrna beach and can provide you with all the surfboard and equipment sales or rentals you need for a great day on the water.
3. Watch Out for Sea Turtles
New Smyrna Beach beaches play host to three different species of sea turtles. Our beaches are a hive of activity for loggerhead, green turtle, and leatherback sea turtles and you will notice their presence on your visit. May 1 through October 31 is sea turtle nesting season. In nesting season, sea turtles will come to shore at night to lay eggs in the sand. During this time of year, beachfront lighting is restricted and you should take caution not to disturb nests, which will be marked clearly. Two months later, hundreds of hatchlings will crawl from the shore to the surf!
When you visit New Smyrna Beach beaches, be mindful of these special sea creatures and take care if you happen across them. Before your trip, you can learn more about New Smyrna Beach sea turtles and see how you can do your part to preserve this endangered species!
4. Go Stand Up Paddleboarding
If surfing isn’t your thing, but you still want to spend a day on the water, try stand up paddleboarding. This popular outdoor activity is a unique and exciting way to see New Smyrna Beach. On a calm day, you can take your paddleboard straight to the ocean and paddle along the beautiful shoreline. Or, for a smoother ride that will introduce you to a different side of New Smyrna Beach, you can also paddleboard along the river. Paddleboard New Smyrna and SUP Paddle Boarding Experience are two great places to go for stand up paddleboarding. Both organizations offer guided tours, lessons, and rentals. And if you’re staying with us at the Night Swan, stand up paddleboarding is really easy! We will store your boards in the garage and when you’re ready, you can launch into the river or arrange a lesson right from our dock!
5. Visit a Beachside Park
One of the best ways to experience New Smyrna Beach beaches is by visiting a beachside park during your stay. At these parks, you’ll find boardwalks to explore, places to eat, fishing piers, water sports rentals, and more! The 27th Avenue Beachfront Park is one of the most popular New Smyrna Beach access points. But, other great parks to explore include Flagler Avenue, Mary McLeod Bethune Beach Park, and Smyrna Dunes Park in New Smyrna Beach, FL.
