Stretching 1.5 miles, the Dune Walkover is a premier feature of Smyrna Dunes Park. These raised boardwalks stretch across the beautiful beach landscape and end up at the ocean or inlet beaches, featuring a landscape of palms, dunes, and even cacti among the sand. View friendly birds, turtles, raccoons, and even foxes along this raised boardwalk. You can walk all the way to the water’s edge and look out on the ocean. Then, camp on the sand for an afternoon picnic!
There are five different ecosystems at Smyrna Dunes Park. These include ocean, river, dunes, scrub zone, and saltwater marsh. The primary system is vast sand dunes, and to protect this ecosystem, there are two miles of elevated walkways, picnic areas, pavilions, and more. This allows visitors to travel through the park in a natural environment without destroying that very environment.
You can start out at the information center that will fill you in on the plants and wildlife at Smyrna Dunes Park and then embark down one of the nature trails. The series of nature trails that run throughout Smyrna Dunes Park are ideal for a day of outdoor exploration. You can get some exercise in by simply walking through nature and taking in all the beautiful views. Or, if you’re feeling a little extra adventurous, you can bike along the trails as well.
Though the trails will emerge you within nature, the observation tower at Smyrna Dunes Park will give you some incredible, sweeping views of the marshes and surrounding landscape. Climb up the three-story tower to see the entire park as well as Ponce Inlet. This is the best place to view the prominent sand dune clusters and gaze down at the spiky Washingtonia palms.
Water activities are big at Smyrna Dunes Park, from fishing and boating to swimming. Fishing is allowed throughout the park, and saltwater fishing regulations apply. One great spot to cast your line is the jetty bordering the dog beach. Swimming is a great activity as well, and one of the best places is on the inlet side of the peninsula. Take a dip and cool off!
There is no added fee to bring your pet to Smyrna Dunes Park, so man’s best friend can enjoy the park and amenities along with you!
